I’ve been craving sushi and sashimi for the past couple of days. Being back from Japan for only a week, I think it’s my withdrawal speaking. Finally, my mother suggested that she take me out to Sushiden (49th and 6th avenue). It was suppose to be good, being a Japanese restaurant imported from Ginza in Tokyo. It was pretty good. I like the small constructed sushi with good slices of fish and a small mound of rice. However, I found myself pining for the Ikura that I had in Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo.
I also really wanted to go to Tomoe Sushi (172 Thompson Street). I have to say that nothing in NYC beats Tomoe Sushi. The slices are so fresh, fatty (!!!) and LARGE. It’s pretty pricey, but well worth the money. Sushiden was good, (and their salmon and uni was pretty superb tonight) but I just don’t believe the price was worth it. If I am going to spend $30 dollars, I would rather spend it at Tomoe.I AM looking forward to going to Esashi for Gen’s birthday, although my top choices at this point is Yama (huge fresh slices) and Tomoe. For inventive sushi rolls, I like to go to Poke (not a place to go if you want just slices of fish – go for the crazy rolls, good cod, and mushroom appetizers).
I like inventive sushi, but that isn’t why I go eat sushi. I would much prefer a fresh beautiful tasting ikura and uni. Oh my god, the uni today tasted so good. The ikura left something to be desired, after having the super fresh kind right near the docks in Japan.
The next place I have been wanting to try is Minca Ramen Factory.
