Back from Cambodia

I landed on the 29th after a 24+ hour flight. I went back to work on the 30th and on a whole, I’ve been okay. Well, that is… at work. I usually crash and start shutting down around 6pm-7pm. Ryan taunts me about being able to stay up past 9pm, however, I really have no desire. I feel like I should go with the flow and take advantage of the fact that I am down by 9pm and up by 5-6am.

Nights like yesterday make it hard, though. We went to see Ryan’s friend Edvinas play until 9-10pm and went to scrounge for food around Astor place. I was appropriately dead on the train ride home and finally curled on the couch to fall asleep while Ryan watched Doctor Who. I realize I REALLY like to fall asleep to shows. :P

The trip itself was an adventure. I will talk about it at winglike.com, I’m sure… Crazy road trips, Ankor Temples, and pretty yummy food. The thing with the food there is, though, there is hardly any fiber! Other than baby bananas and other fruits, during the actual meal, there isn’t any vegetables other than a sprinkle of bean sprouts. There are tons of carbs. There is Porridge, pan fried noodles, or rice and chicken for breakfast. For lunch, there is more chicken, noodles, or curry. Then dinner is another protein and carbohydrate rich meal. I don’t think there is a conception of a raw leafy greens to accompany your meal. (I don’t think most Asian cultures have such a thing) Bean sprouts and various mint variety (as basil is considered one there) are sometimes put in hot soups and noodle dishes raw, but the heat of the meal is suppose to cook them. And it’s not enough to count as even a single serving of vegetables. (Me and my American paradigms!)

This is just to point out that in the States, I generally start the day with oatmeal, have a salad and soup for lunch, and try to squeeze salad in there to accompany my dinner. I mean, not to get too intimate here, but traveling always makes me feel out of sorts.

As a side note: Whenever you travel with people, you get intimately acquainted with their habits and cycles. When I traveled with Genevieve and Chris to Italy, we had updates on our cycles… you know… and… I’m just going to stop right here.

Despite my daily salad lunch, I’ve been still feeling really bloated. I definitely need to do a noodle fast. (This obviously is a fail since last night Ryan and I went to Setagaya Ramen Shop. The day before my mother decided to make Sukiyaki with udon, despite my pleas for NO MORE NOODLES.) This morning, instead of my eggs (I’m out of oatmeal at home), I had another one of those beet, celery, parsley, carrot, apple, and pineapple drinks from the fruit stand outside my work. I also bought 3 bananas and that was my breakfast. Currently, I’m drinking my 11am coffee. I’ll try to do a salad lunch, again, and I will see how that goes.

Yeah~ I went there.

Currently I’m working on publishing some Cambodian food posts. I don’t know whether I should make it one BIG entry, or little posts on each thing. I will probably try to find a way organize them into some semblance of a narrative.
