Default Brunch Post

What is this blog without the weekly brunch update? Unless I make something really special, I’ll just summarize the weekend in a single post.

On Saturday I made eggs sunny side up with Japanese Spicy Berkshire Pork sausages. The sausages plumped up and they were delicious. My mother used to buy these too. On Sunday, I made fluffy pancakes with evaporated milk with crispy ribbons of bacon. I never really fried bacon before. My mother would cook it and she wouldn’t do it crispy. I first had crispy bacon camping, but never attempted to find out the secret to that. Well, Ryan has a fool-proof method for crispy bacon… just keep flipping them as they bubble with oil. Eventually when they shrink enough, place them on a plate with a paper towel. Let them cool, and they will be crispy! (Maybe this is common knowledge?) The whole apartment (due to the bad ventilation in the kitchen area) smelled of bacon and it was awesome.

This weekend, I also tried out the Vietnamese coffee and coffeemaker Sophea got me. It was small, cute, and tiny. (I keep forgetting to bring one for my mother!)

It basically has three different levels of strainers. The top strainer for the water, a cup to put the fine espresso grade gound coffee, and a plate with another strainer to rest on top of your cup. I found this detailing its use… which I DID NOT use when I was making coffee today. I like TOTALLY used too much coffee. I was like, I should put LARGE TABLESPOONS OF COFFEE… like I do in my moka pot. Man. The coffee was good, but I didn’t have any condensed milk. (I did have evaporated milk on hand, though.) I put it some raw sugar. It wasn’t the same, but it was pretty good… very strong. I must get some condensed milk to do it the right way.

(Which reminds me, my mother has this brand of Japanese condensed milk, which comes in a tube that she uses. It’s great, because you don’t have to feel pressured to use up the whole can. I should find that. Tangent: Condensed milk is so awesome with strawberries.)

During the week I only eat eggs if I have enough time in the morning to fry an egg to put on some bread. Otherwise, I have cereal, toast, or oatmeal in the office. We do like to eat well during the weekend. I think a year ago, we started to stop going out every single weekend. That was around the same time I was looking for a job. Mmm, brunch, one of my favorite things in the world!
